NEURO PHYSIOTHERAPIST FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Are you or someone you know suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS)? If yes, then you have a chronic disease that affects your central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves),
Your doctor may have given you information about MS disease, so you know that this happens when your immune system attacks the myelin, the protective covering of your nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord.
MS can cause problems with balance, muscle control, vision, and other basic functions of the body. Other signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis include the following.
- Trouble walking feeling tired
- Muscle weakness, spasms blurred or double vision
- Numbness, tingling sexual problems
- Depression problems focusing or remembering
- Poor bladder or bowel control
These happen because of the damage to your nerve fibres, which do not work anymore as they should, so your brain fails to send signals through your body correctly.
Diagnosing multiple sclerosis is not easy. It is because it has the same MS neurological symptoms as the other nerve disorders. If you think you have it, and you want to be sure, you should see a specialist on the brain and nervous system — a professional, called a neurologist.
There is no known cure yet for MS, but there is a number of treatments that can keep your body working well, and help you improve how you feel. One of these treatments is neuro physiotherapy. This branch of physiotherapy works to improve your functions if you have suffered from physical impairment due to neurological conditions. The professional who carries out this treatment is called a neuro physiotherapist.
At Mission Walk, we use neuro physiotherapy in managing multiple sclerosis as part of our integrated approach to addressing your needs and the needs of our other clientele.
Neuro physiotherapists often deal with conditions that affect movement and physical ability due to stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, Bell’s palsy, spinal cord injury, and MS.
Depending on your medical condition, the effects may range from paralysis, motor deficits, tremor, and spasm to ataxia (lack of sensation). The damage to your central nervous system can break down afferent and efferent pathways. Afferents are neurons that transmit information from your sensory organs to the central nervous system. Efferent neurons do the other way around — they transmit impulses from the central nervous system to your organs and limbs.
A neuro physiotherapist aims to help rehabilitate you from physical impairment caused by the above-mentioned neurological conditions. The treatment is tailored to your specific needs, with a goal-oriented target. On their initial visit, the neuro physiotherapist will determine if you need significant improvements, such as being able to walk again or your small fine movements that need to be corrected.
Studies have shown that rehabilitation is the only way to improve functional outcomes in MS patients. It can improve your mobility, aerobic capacity, muscle strength, and quality of life. It is not true that if you have MS and do exercises, it can cause more fatigue and damage. This was a misconception that had already been discredited. You and I should know that physical activity is an important component in treating MS, and exercise is advantageous to your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Neuro Rehab Physiotherapy can help build strength and coordination not only by tailored exercises. Depending on your motor dysfunction, splints or limb positioning may be needed to aid joint recovery. In some cases, mobility aids such as a walking frame or a special wheelchair will be necessary and should include training on how to use them.
Exercises learned from a neuro physiotherapist should be repeated daily with the help of neuro rehab equipment, both at home; and at the neuro-rehabilitation center to engage in group activities. This is to prevent the deterioration of motor functions and muscle tone.
Remember, rehabilitation depends on the extent of your brain injury/damage and how prompt neuro physiotherapy has started. Also, your attitude or willingness is crucial to the treatment’s success. All the family members and the caregivers need to be involved in the process, which will ensure that neuro physiotherapy is performed at home and in the center.
Most of all, it will improve your morale and attitude.
